FORD MOTOR CORP. TO INSTALL PATENTED FUMES TO FUEL SYSTEM

Read the article herehttp://www.greenbiz.com/news/news_third.cfm?NewsID=35835According to a company press release, Ford Motor Corp. announced that it would install its patented Fumes-to-Fuel system at its Oakville, Ontario, Assembly Plant, which will convert emissions from its paint shop into electricity. The system will launch with an internal combustion engine before shifting to a stationary large-scale fuel cell to boost effectiveness. The company will buy the DFC300MA fuel cell from manufacturer FuelCell Energy Inc. The fumes from the paint solvent will get transformed into 300 kilowatts of green energy. The technology was launched as a pilot installation at the Dearborn Truck Plant using a 5 kilowatt fuel cell. A year later, Ford installed installed technology at its Michigan Truck Plant using a 50 kilowatt Stirling engine to generate electricity. The Oakville system announced Thursday will launch with a 120 kilowatt internal combustion engine before shifting to the 300 kilowatt fuel cell, which is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 88 percent and eliminate nitrogen oxide emissions completely.

GET ON GREEN DRY CLEANING

I felt like I was pretty green when it came to dry cleaning. I do not get plastic bags over my garments (which is easier said than done), I recycle my hangers, and I wear my dry-cleanables as many times as I can before I have to take them in. However, after I read Co-op America’s article today about Green Dry Cleaning, I am realizing that there is a lot more to the equation….Part of the Green dry cleaning equation is about the waste, but is it very much about the chemicals that are used to “clean” the clothes too - chemincals that are dangerous to our health and the environment (which of course, impacts health, all cyclical)According to the Occidental College’s Pollution Prevention Center, 85% of dry cleaners in the US (over 35,000) use perchloroethylene (also called perc) as a solvent in the dry cleaning process. This is a toxic chemical that is not good for people or the planet. But we are not doomed to perc-cleaning. There are ways to clean clothes bearing a “Dry Clean Only” label without putting toxins into the environment, or bringing dangerous chemicals home or harming the health of the employees working at dry cleaners (thinking about their exposure to all those chemicals freaks me out)We love Co-Op America’s suggested alternatives to dry cleaning:Best Bets for Delicate Clothes (from Co-op America)Our top recommendations for dealing with your “Dry Clean Only” clothes: • Handwash your dry-clean-only clothes: Green living expert and Care2.com editor Annie Bond offers eco-friendly instructions on safely handwashing silk, wool, and rayon clothing.• Use wet and liquid CO2 cleaners: Occidental College recently launched a national directory of liquid CO2 and wet cleaners. (The liquid CO2 cleaners listed do not include Solvair cleaners, which use a toxic solvent as part of their process.) Also, keep in mind that some wet cleaners, like Chicago’s Greener Cleaner, allow you to mail in your clothes and will mail them back to you wet-cleaned and pressed. Contact Greener Cleaner at 888/875-8345.• Avoid hydrocarbon, greenearth, and solvair CO2 cleaning: Though somewhat better than perc, these methods all use toxic solvents. And because Co-op America rocks, they even condensed all the information in their Real Money green dry cleaning article into a portable dry cleaning alternatives wallet card you can take with you. PAPER PLASTIC WITH THAT ?

Plastic-lid boxes are already lining the holiday aisles at our local stores, with hundreds of paper Christmas greetings to choose from. But, the 150-year old tradition of Christmas cards just got harder.According to an article published by USA Today, the “blanket” Christmas cardno longer suffices, as it does not allow for personalization. Now imagine sending out a small number, like 100 different cards to 100different people, on top of the shopping that is required for those who aregetting gifts and to make sure Santa has everything on the list. And now imagine personalizing each card, from the type of card to themessage inside, for each of those 100 people on your list. This small taskjust got daunting, didn’t it?!According to Hallmark, 2 billion paper cards will be sent this Christmas! Now that is a heck of a lot of trees, wouldn’t you agree?Other environmentally damaging manufacturing practices are used ingenerating paper greetings, and that includes toxic printer inks. There isalso energy being used and pollution generated to produce, deliver, sale andre-deliver these cards. So where do electronic greetings fit in? For those who would like to save afew thousand trees, provide that personal greeting and create aself-maintained address book/checklist, online greetings are a great option. In the USA Today article, Jamie Shaw, who lives in Utah and Rio de Janeiro, says she couldn't keep track of all her friends' addresses to send each aphysical card, and with electronic cards she can customize different e-cardsfor different recipients. So what happens when you receive a paper greeting? Well, if you aren’t apack rat, then we recommend that if there is a mixed-paper recycling programnear you, you can just put your old greeting cards in with those oldnewspapers and magazines, and join the force of online greetings
